Adira - Prologue
“So, I see you’ve decided to take over for Adon.”
“Adon?”
“Nothing, just the last swordfighter they had. Kurex blew him up.”
“Er…really?”
“Yeah. So, why don’t you introduce yourself?”
“I’m known as Adira. I’m a mercenary/adventurer, out to see the world and fight evil.”
“I see. So, where are you from?”
“I grew up on a small island near Exis. I’ve always dreamed of going on adventures and helping people, but the rest of our little community didn’t care much for the rest of the world. They just wanted to sit at home and tend their fields and animals in peace. As soon as I was old enough, I left to see the world.”
“And did you?”
“See the world? Oh, yes. It was a rather rude awakening, I can tell you. It was a long, hard path to get to where I am today.”
“And where is that, exactly?”
“I’m a well-known and respected…at least as much as mercenaries and adventurers are ever respected. And I have a few contacts in the adventuring community. Not as many as some, I’m sure, but I get around. Always on the move.”
“Why is that?”
“No reason, really. But I don’t want to go back to the place I grew up, so I have no real home. It makes sense to wander, anyway. More exposure, more chance of finding something worth doing.”
“And how did you know Finnio?”
“He wasn’t the most scrupulous of businessmen, but he did know a lot of the right people. He’d been going to help me find a group interested in questing on Selos, but then he disappeared. I wandered about on my own for a while, but couldn’t find much work. I’m almost out of money, too. Funny, though, when I happened across him next it was over at Rikkla’s stronghold, with a group of adventurers ready to welcome me. I really don’t know how he does it. He even left a nice pile of magical objects for me. I’ve got to track him down when this is over and give him a big thank you.”
“So you’re going to stick with the group, then?”
“For now. They look like they could use a hand, and I’m not about to turn them down if they want my help. It’s not like I have anything better to do.”
“Good luck. I would suggest that you try not to get into Kurex’ line of fire.”
“Thanks. I’ll do that.”
